Tropical Storm Fiona affects Gaudeloupe, next week Bahamas as hurricane
Tropical Storm Fiona passed near Guadeloupe on Friday evening, hitting some of the Caribbean’s easternmost islands with strong rain and wind as forecasters warned the storm could later threaten Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic with dangerous rains.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Fiona was then likely to become a hurricane near the Bahamas next week. The center said Fiona would slow its forward movement. It was predicted to be close to Puerto Rico late Saturday and then cross over the Dominican Republic on Monday.
The forecast called for rainfall totals of as much as a foot in places across eastern and southern Puerto Rico and 16 inches in the eastern Dominican Republic. That much rain could cause flash floods and mudslides in higher terrain, and life-threatening surf was possible from Fiona’s winds, the hurricane center said.
At 11 p.m., Fiona was moving at 14 mph, about 55 miles west-northwest of Guadeloupe.
Tropical storm warnings were in effect for Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, Guadeloupe, St. Barthelemy, and St. Martin, Puerto Rico, including Vieques and Culebra, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, the south coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano westward to Cabo Caucedo and the north coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano westward to Puerto Plata.
Tropical storm watches were in effect for Dominica, the south coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Caucedo westward to Barahona.
At 8 p.m., Fiona was moving at 15 mph, about 15 miles north northwest of Guadeloupe.

At 5 p.m., Fiona was moving at 15 mph, about 20 miles east northeast of Guadeloupe.
